Local attractions

Alford boasts two museums (Grampian Transport Museum and The Heritage Centre), a historic battlefield and plenty of beautiful walks in both Murray Park and Haughton Country Park. You will also find a swimming pool and dry ski slope in the village and Kildrummy Castle Gardens nearby.

On the park itself, you can take a round of putting or go for a quiet stroll along the River Don, which is especially popular with fishermen and canoeists. The park has two children’s playgrounds and kids of all ages love riding on the Alford Valley Railway’s narrow-gauge train, which takes you from the country park to the transport museum. Alternatively, just sit back, take it easy and unwind as you savour the peaceful tranquillity of the surroundings and the park’s enthusiastic chorus of birds.

As a base for exploring, Haughton is perfectly placed; 15 golf courses are within a half-hour drive, and the Alford Golf Club is just next door to the park. Pitfichie Forest Park, which is nine miles away, is a haven for mountain bikers, while Balmoral and the castle trail are easily reached. As are the Cairngorms National Park and many of Scotland’s finest whisky distilleries.
